Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
