In a defensive struggle on Sunday, the Denver Broncos clinched a close win over the winless New York Jets. Quarterback Bo Nix threw an early scoring strike and specialist Wil Lutz kicked the game-winning go-ahead field goal to secure the ugly win.
Despite registering nine sacks versus Jets quarterback Justin Fields, the Broncos were behind 11-10 following giving up a safety in the third quarter. Interestingly, the Jets managed just 82 offensive yards during the entire game.
Nix, who went 19 of 30 attempts for 174 yards, led a critical 12-play, 65-yard drive that culminated in Lutz's short kick with just over five minutes remaining.
In spite of their horrendous offensive display, the Jets still had possession with a opportunity to score a possible victory. But Fields was sacked on fourth-and-eight from the Denver 44 after coach Aaron Glenn opted to go for it instead of calling on specialist Nick Folk for a difficult field-goal attempt.
The Jets quarterback had difficulties throughout, completing just 9 of 17 passes for 45 yards. The Jets ended up with minus-10 passing yards, the lowest in any contest since 1998.
"Our passing game was completely absent," Glenn commented after the contest.
Rico Dowdle surpassed 200 yards from scrimmage for the consecutive week and rookie Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a 33-yard kick as time expired to secure the Carolina Panthers a 30-27 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Los Angeles Rams ended the opening two quarters with a defensive stop and subsequently quarterback Matthew Stafford led them to two scores to start the third quarter in their 17-3 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Daniel Jones passed for two touchdown passes and the running back scored the go-ahead score with 4:32 left, giving the Indianapolis Colts a 31-27 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Sam Darnold passed for scoring throws to his receiver and another target, and Seattle dominated the trenches on their way to a 20-12 win.
The veteran quarterback threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and the Pittsburgh Steelers had minimal difficulty in their 23-9 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Justin Herbert escaped the defensive pressure and connected with his receiver for a long reception in the closing seconds, setting up Cameron Dicker's fifth field goal to give the Los Angeles Chargers a narrow win.
Drake Maye passed for 261 yards and three scores as the visiting New England Patriots defeated the New Orleans Saints 25-19.
