Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
